The State Within and Jason Isaacs as Mark Brydon certainly deserve the Golden Globe nominations as Best Series and best Lead Actor in a series! I was hoping that Brotherhood would win those two prestigious nominations, but
apparently the powers that be preferred to show they are aware of Jason's powerful talents, but did not want to nominate another gangster/murder show and a sociopathic murderer, having just gotten Sopranos out of their system!
I have watched this series on dvd so many times I do know the script almost by rote, but looking at Jason playing a quite adept and dedicated political hero is a great deal of fun, and he look just terrific in great clothes and a leadership role.
The story-line, of having lost his only true love, a beautiful young woman married to his best friend who was killed in political strife, is a good one, very touching to see Jason and his former friends and to see his reaction as they are assassinated. One dies in his arms, very touchingly, and we know this was the brother of Jason's lover. As the details of her death are revealed and the only witness murdered by a corrupt state governor, Jason falls in love with a young woman of ardent liberal politics, and must keep her too from being murdered by the same corrupt, heartless, wickedly powerful plotters who deal out mayhem and murder at will simply to gain more power! All very intriguing, if a bit hard to follow because it is packed tightly into the series.
But Jason is just fantastic, and very believeable as the hero, British Ambassador in Washington DC, opposing the wilfully warlike American woman so aptly portrayed by Sheron Gless. She was always one of my favorites years ago in "Cagney and Lacey" and I was delighted to see her sharp, mean portrayal of this American Woman devoted to the memory of her dead son, and ready to defend her coutnry as she sees it needs to be done. The whole series is packed with drama and moves quickly taking us in and out of embassy, mansion, street violence, and powerful plotters. I hope it can make a good showing as a drama, but I certainly do wish that Jason would get the recognition he so richly deserves as "Best Lead Actor in a Series!"
